ADHD Grown Up: A Guide to Adolescent and Adult ADHD $12.35 Yet despite this awareness, many clinicians as well as the general public continue to under-appreciate the significance of ADHD as it manifests itself in adults. What happens to all these ADHD kids when they grow up? ADHD isn’t like a cold or the flu-it doesn’t just go away all of the time. As a child grows and matures, it is possible that the symptoms lessen, and in some cases adults are able to overcome the disorder, but it doesn’t usually just vanish on its own. At least 40-70% of those diagnosed with this disorder as kids will have it persist when they are adults; however, mental health professionals often overlook ADHD symptoms and continue calling their adult patients who suffer from it anxious or depressed, or diagnose them with a personality disorder. Family members may also consider adults with procrastination issues, inattentiveness, and distractibility lazy or malingering, when in fact they are suffering from ADHD. Here Joel Young MD, who has been treating and researching ADHD for more than15 years, takes a comprehensive look at ADHD in adults. As an accurate diagnosis is essential to a patient’s successful treatment, the book begins by detailing how clinicians can provide the most accurate ADHD diagnosis. Once established, the basic diagnostic process begins. This includes obtaining a careful medical history to rule out medical problems that may mimic the symptoms of ADHD, taking a psychiatric history and carefully considering any family or genetic history of medical and psychiatric problems. Some helpful tools used to evaluate quickly and comprehensively distressed patients are presented. Comorbidities are extremely common among patients with ADHD. Emphasis in the book is placed on the most common ADHD comorbidities, including mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorders, eating disorders and learning disabilities. The book also details the different types of ADHD that clinicians may encounter: ADHD (predominately hyperactive/impulsive subtype) is manifested in people who are hyperactive, and experience serious problems at work and at home. They are fidgety and impatient and may be the most commonly diagnosed adults. ADHD (predominately-inattentive subtype) manifests itself in patients who are typically, but not exclusively, female. As children, these women were inattentive and distractible, underperforming but not demonstrating overt behaviors typical of their hyperactive brethren. Their conditions may be complicated by factors like anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Even as adults, most clinicians overlook their symptoms. Other chapters focus on diagnostic and treatment issues in specific populations: adolescents and common adolescent mindsets; women with ADHD; substance abuse; psychotherapy and coaching as treatments and medications. The medications chapter will review the use of antidepressant and mood stabilizing medications taken in concert with stimulants or non-stimulants, and other medication c |

The ADHD Affected Athlete $16.31 Considering today’s high level of interest in ADHD, it is surprising there are no books specifically aimed at ADHD Affected Athletes, until now. This book explains how ADHD affects athletes, coaches and parents. The author treats ADHD not as a liability to athletics, but as an asset that can be developed. He examines how good coaches can easily make the wrong assumption about ADHD athletes. The author also examines which sports, positions and styles provide the ADHD Affected Athlete with the greatest opportunity to succeed as an athlete. This book is full of examples and suggestions that will help anyone better understand the condition and how to help ADHD Affected Athletes reach their athletic potential. "In a classic "catch 22" scenario, where would a baseball coach typically play someone who isn’t "paying attention" or seems distracted? The coach will play that person where the least amount of action occurs. And in baseball (or softball) that is right field. Yet, because nothing happens in right field the ADDer becomes even less interested in the game and the sport in general." It also includes sections on the effect of ADHD medications on the athlete and a section for parents of ADHD Affected Athletes. |

ADHD Comorbidities: Handbook for ADHD Complications in Children and Adults $89.33 Many books address various aspects of ADHD-but " ADHD Comorbidities: Handbook for ADHD Complications in Children and Adults" is the only one that covers the multiple ways in which ADHD is complicated by other psychiatric and learning disorders in both children and adults. It features comprehensive, research-based information on the condition and its full range of comorbidities, from mood disorders to developmental coordination disorder, written by researcher-clinicians familiar with the complications that these additional disorders pose. The authors summarize in accessible language what is currently known about ADHD and its comorbidities from preschool age to adulthood, describing how ADHD produces different profiles at different stages of development. The book offers a new paradigm for understanding ADHD, viewing it not as a simple behavior disorder but as a complex developmental impairment of executive functions in the brain. In describing combinations of disorders in various age groups, this effective guide shows that significant impairments can occur in adolescence and adulthood, when individuals face increased demands for self-management. And because adults with ADHD are likely to have at least one additional psychiatric disorder at some point in their lives, this handbook also describes how to adjust treatment strategies for both ADHD and additional disorders to reduce the impairments resulting from comorbidity. Among the book’s features: It reviews aspects of ADHD not only for elementary-school children, adolescents, and adults but also for preschoolers, giving ADHD developmental context by describing how symptoms in preschool years differ from those in older children Eleven chapters offer practical clinical help for patients whose ADHD appears in combination with other disorders, including aggression, mood disorders, obsessive/compulsive disorders, substance abuse, Tourette syndrome, and the autistic/Asperger’s disorder spectrum. It presents guidelines for assessing and treating complicated ADHD, including psychopharmacological treatment, psychosocial treatment, cognitive therapy, and tailoring treatment to individuals and their families. It provides guidance on adapting and adjusting medications and other interventions to optimize treatment effects for the wide diversity of complex cases that embody ADHD. It contains useful information about how to discern other disorders when the chief complaint suggests ADHD-and how to detect ADHD when the patient’s presentation has been modified by the presence of other disorders. With its comprehensive summaries of research and wealth of clinical guidance, this handbook clearly shows how attentional disorders are related to other conditions and how patients with these more complex variants of ADD can be more effectively recognized and treated. |

Nature’s Ritalin for the Marathon Mind: Nurturing Your ADHD Child with Exercise $11.87 ADHD is an epidemic among young Americans, millions of whom are on a regimen of prescription drugs. Meanwhile, exercise has become a less routine part of childhood than at any time in the past. Are those two trends related? Could lack of daily exercise be a factor in ADHD? Exercise has a neurochemical effect on the brain similar to that of the popular medications, without the unwanted side effects. Stephen C. Putnam reviews in detail the scientific literature and practical experiments showing that exercise is remarkably effective in treating ADHD. He shows how to determine the right amount of exercise, and how to motivate your children to keep up their activities. This is not an "anti-Ritalin" book. The author acknowledges that medication is sometimes helpful and cautions that care should be taken whenever changing from one treatment to another. However, he notes that a great many children have been able to reduce medication or eliminate it entirely with a regular schedule of exercise — greatly improving classroom performance, social life, and overall well-being. This is hopeful, helpful information for millions of children and their parents, teachers, coaches, and counselors. Reading it will change the way you think about ADHD. |
