What Are The Symptoms Of Adult ADD – Do They Differ From Those Children Experience?
The symptoms of adult add can really be frustrating and may negatively impact your life in a number of ways. You might experience problems in every area of your life, from relationships to career. The good news that since you are interested in learning about the signs of ADD/ADHD in adults you are actually taking the first step to not only understanding the different challenges you face but also toward identifying your symptoms so that you are able to compensate as well as how to capitalize on your strengths.
Despite what many people think ADD/ADHD is not a problem that affects only children. If you were never diagnosed while you were a child that does not mean that you won’t experience the symptoms now that you’re an adult. It is not uncommon for ADD to go unrecognized during childhood. If you were not diagnosed you might have been labelled as a child by the adults that surrounded you as being lazy or a bad student. Sometimes children learn to adjust and to compensate for the symptoms but when they grow up they find it difficult to juggle all their responsibilities and that is when they encounter problems. Everyone feels overwhelmed but for those who have ADD/ADHD life can very often seem absolutely impossible!
So what are the signs and symptoms of adult add?
Attention Deficit Disorder very often manifests differently in children than it does in adults and the symptoms are different for each person affected with the disorder. Take a look at three of the more common symptoms of adult ADD/ADHD. When you are able to pinpoint the more prevalent symptoms you can then work toward dealing with them.
1. Difficulty concentrating and staying focused
Handling simple and mundane tasks that require your focus or concentration can prove to be difficult for the adult with ADD/ADHD and you might find that you become easily distracted. You might alternate between tasks and activities and you have to battle boredom as well. These symptoms of adult add can be easily missed simply because they’re not disruptive like hyperactivity or impulsivity. You might experience difficulties with inattention in the following ways:
- You find that you ‘zone out’ even during conversations without even realizing it.
- Your attention wanders.
- You find it difficult to stay focused when reading or listening to other people.
- You struggle to finish even simple tasks.
- You tend to miss details which results in work that is not finished.
- You find that you can’t remember conversations or directions.
2. Hyperfocus
Despite the fact that those with ADD/ADHD might struggle with staying focused on tasks and activities, especially those of little interest, there is in fact a flip side to the coin. People with this disorder might find that they become overly focused on tasks that they find interesting or stimulating. When this symptom occurs it is referred to as Hyperfocus. This is really a coping mechanism for distraction but it can be so intense that you end up tuning out everything and everyone else around you. You end up losing track of time and even neglect those tasks that require your attention. While it can be used to your advantage Hyperfocus might also cause problems.
3. Disorganization and forgetfulness
This is yet another very common ADD/ADHD symptom and the individual is often faced with the feeling that their life just seems to be totally out of control. They have difficulty organizing their lives and getting to the things that they need to work on. They can’t plan and organize properly so that they are able to stay on top of their responsibilities. Symptoms in this category include:
- Not being able to organize yourself whether this is pertaining to your job, home, or even those areas you frequent such as your office or car.
- You might find that you tend to procrastinate.
- You’re always known for running late.
- You forget appointments and other commitments.
- You have a tendency to lose things like your keys or documents.

The Gift of Adult ADD: How to Transform Your Challenges & Build on Your Strengths $11.92 If you have attention deficit disorder (ADD), you may act impulsively, daydream, and have trouble focusing, but clinical studies suggest that these same symptoms may make you exceptionally creative, intuitive, and energetic. In fact, many people with ADD claim to have become successful because of their ADD, not in spite of it. In The Gift of Adult ADD, Lara Honos-Webb adapts the revolutionary approach first introduced in the parenting book The Gift of ADHD to the lives of adults with ADD. Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, this book shows you how to transform symptoms into strengths to improve your relationships, job performance, parenting skills, and overall quality of life. You’ll also read inspiring stories of real people with ADD who have become successful in part because of their ability to meet the challenges of ADD and make the most of its gifts. "Lara Honos-Webb shows us how the demands of a global and digital culture may make the signature traits of ADD-inventiveness, need for stimulation, and interpersonal intuition-in high demand." -Daniel H. Pink, author of "A Whole New Mind" "If you have ADD and have been looking for the meaning of your struggles, this book will change your life. You will see, beyond doubt, that it’s time to stop patching up your weaknesses and start learning about your many gifts." -Carol Adrienne, Ph.D., author of "The Purpose of Your Life" "Honos-Webb’s book is a wonderful guidebook for optimistic living. What one chooses to focus on grows, and Honos-Webb has provided the framework for others to learn this important philosophy. It is especially important for those with ADHD to embrace the positive side of their personalities." -Stephanie Moulton Sarkis, Ph.D., author of Making the Grade with ADD and 10 Simple Solutions to Adult ADD "In her newest book, Honos-Webb builds on the core principles of her previous work to show how adults with ADD can find fulfilling and rewarding lives by being who they are. ‘Find what you love and are good at, and let that guide you, ‘ she advises, offering real-life stories of people who have done just that. In this inspiring book, Honos-Webb provides a host of specific activities to help adults with ADD use self-reflection, insight, and creativity to address weaknesses without letting those weaknesses overshadow their strengths and talents. The Gift of Adult ADD is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature that shows how to go beyond limiting-and misleading-diagnostic labels." -Barbara Probst, MSW, LCSW, author of "When the Labels Don’t Fit" "A revolutionary, paradigm-shifting book that will undoubtedly change the way we think about ADD. Honos-Webb’s contribution is a gift, providing no-nonsense strategies and inspiring examples of how to transform apparent deficits into strengths and assets." -Kelly Howell, president, Brain Sync "Talk abo |

Still, the public harbors misconceptions, and that means millions suffer needlessly. And that includes millions of couples who can’t understand why their lives together are so hard-sometimes despite many attempts at couples therapy. Everyone knows someone with adult ADHD. Yet we misattribute the symptoms to anxiety, depression, or even laziness, selfishness, or moodiness. Moreover, we assume ADHD means "little boys with ants in their pants." In fact, childhood hyperactivity goes "underground" as the person matures, resulting in a mentally restless state. Meticulously researched by award-winning journalist Gina Pera, Is It You, Me, or Adult A.D.D.? is a comprehensive guide to recognizing the behaviors where you least expect them (on the road and in the bedroom, for example) and developing compassion for couples wrestling with unrecognized ADHD symptoms. It also offers the latest |

Superparenting for ADD: An Innovative Approach to Raising Your Distracted Child $14.67 With decades of experience working with ADD children, Dr. Edward Hallowell-a pediatric psychiatric clinician, father of two ADD children, and himself an adult with ADD-understands how easily the gifts of this condition are lost on a child amid negative comments from doctors, teachers, and even loving but frustrated parents. Hallowell has long argued that ADD is too often misunderstood, mistreated, and mislabeled as a "disability." Now he teams up with top academic ADD researcher Peter S. Jensen, M.D., who is himself a father of an ADD child, to bring you an upbeat and encouraging new approach to living with and helping your ADD child. The practical strength-based techniques Drs. Hallowell and Jensen present put the talents, charms, and positive essence of your child ahead of any presumed shortcomings. Clearly outlined and organized, Superparenting for ADD offers a specific game plan that includes – UNCONDITIONAL LOVE Tune out the diagnosticians and labelers and simply notice and nourish the spirit of your child for who he is. Providing this unshakable base of support will set the tone for all interactions to come. – VIEWING THE MIRROR TRAITS There are positive sides of the negative symptoms associated with ADD: stubbornness = persistence; impulsiveness = creativity; intrusiveness = eagerness. By recognizing the mirror traits, you avoid the ravages of shame and fear. – THE CYCLE OF EXCELLENCE Use this critical 5-step process to help a child develop self- and social awareness. Nurture an environment in which a child can safely take risks, reserve time to let a child dabble as a way to learn, encourage playful practice, support mastery of a skill (whatever the skill may be), and then recognize a child’s accomplishments. – IDENTIFYING AND TAPPING THE SOURCE Pinpoint your child’s inner, conative strengths, which drive what he naturally and spontaneously does, as opposed to what he is told to do or feels he must do. Your child will do his best when allowed to use these conative strengths. Drs. Hallowell and Jensen fully understand the real and everyday challenges-both at home and at school-facing parents of an ADD child. Now this important book shows you how to unwrap the wonderful, surprising gifts of ADD and turn what is too often labeled a lifelong disability into a lifelong blessing. "From the Hardcover edition." |
