Effects of Adhd Drugs on Children – Parents on High Alert

One of the most alarming effects of ADHD drugs on children is the fact that they may well start them down the awful road of drug dependency. Children who have used Ritalin (one of the most widely prescribed ADHD drugs) may be predisposed to using street drugs such as cocaine, Crack Cocaine, meth and amphetamines in general. This should mot surprise us given that the main ingredients of these drugs are amphetamines and methylphenidate. Both act on the brain’s central nervous system. They have been proven to be addictive.

A survey done by the National Institute of Drug Abuse showed that 15% of 12th graders had used
a prescription drug for a non-medical reason. Guess which prescription drugs are at the top of the list for teenagers ? Morphine and ADHD drugs (Ritalin, Wellburtin, Concerta and Strattera).

Yet another alarming effect of ADHD drugs on children is that they are often sold on the school parking lot – this activity is known as ‘pharming’. These teen drugs are often found in the teenager’s own home – in the medicine cabinet!

Other effects of ADHD drugs on children are no less alarming. Sometimes it takes ages to get the dosage right. But even so, the effects of these drugs are a serious burden for the child. The FDA site makes scary reading as it lists all the side effects and problems associated with these psychostimulant drugs. There are lots of cases of children losing weight as a result of loss of appetite and have to be given healthy snacks to keep them going. There is also a long list of effects ranging from cardiac problems, Blood Pressure and even suicidal thought and hallucinations.

Many parents of ADHD now refuse point blank to give their children these psychostimulants for many of the above reasons. They are now looking further afield, away from the suffocating grasp of the drug industry. There are ADHD alternative remedies which are safe, effective and will not lead to drug addiction. These natural/homeopathic ADHD remedies are scorned by the medical community but many thousands of parents will now vouch for them as being the safest and most effective ADHD cure there is. You can find out a lot more about these treatments in the link below and you will never have to worry again about the effects of ADHD drugs on children.

The Gift of ADHD: How to Transform Your Child's Problems Into Strengths

The Gift of ADHD: How to Transform Your Child’s Problems Into Strengths

$3.95

Attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is thought to affect between 3 and 6 percent of school-aged children. The symptoms of the disorder – difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and agitation – lead others to brand them as difficult, unfocused, and unruly. But the clinical studies and experiences of the author of The Gift of ADHD suggest that many of the traits that label kids with ADHD may be an expression of deeper gifts: powerful imagination, searching insight, and unusual intuition. The goal of this book is to help readers recast the paradigm they use to think about the condition, encouraging them to help ADHD kids develop their unique gifts. The book begins with an overview of current ADHD diagnosis including definitions and a sample of a case study. Each subsequent chapter reframes certain ADHD symptoms in a positive way and reinforces this transformation with awareness exercises designed to increase the appreciation of the child’s traits. These techniques include action strategies for channeling ADHD traits into productive outlets. And the book doesn’t limit itself to a discussion of kids with ADHD: It includes exercises to help parents cope with any feelings of failure they may be experiencing and to reverse any negative patterns associated with ADHD that might be at work in their families. The book offers advice on how to navigate education and mental health systems to the best advantage of ADHD kids and how to understand and make the best use of conventional ADHD therapies, including prescription drugs.

Medicating Children: ADHD and Pediatric Mental Health

Medicating Children: ADHD and Pediatric Mental Health

$48.22

Why and how did ADHD become the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder among children and adolescents, as well as one of the most controversial? Stimulant medication had been used to treat excessively hyperactive children since the 1950s. And the behaviors that today might lead to an ADHD diagnosis had been observed since the early 1930s as "organic drivenness," and then by various other names throughout the decades. Rick Mayes and his coauthors argue that a unique alignment of social and economic trends and incentives converged in the early 1990s with greater scientific knowledge to make ADHD the most prevalent pediatric mental disorder. New movements advocating for the rights of children and the disabled and a massive increase in Medicaid spending on psychotropic drugs all contributed to the dramatic spike in ADHD diagnoses and stimulant use. "Medicating Children" is unique in that it integrates analyses of the clinical, political, historical, educational, social, economic, and legal aspects of ADHD and stimulant pharmacotherapy. Thus, it will be invaluable to educators, clinicians, parents, and policymakers, all of whom are trying to determine what is in the best interest of millions of children.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that afflicts anywhere from 2 to 5 percent of the adult population (roughly 8-10 million Americans). Nature's Ritalin for the Marathon Mind: Nurturing Your ADHD Child with Exercise

Nature’s Ritalin for the Marathon Mind: Nurturing Your ADHD Child with Exercise

$11.87

ADHD is an epidemic among young Americans, millions of whom are on a regimen of prescription drugs. Meanwhile, exercise has become a less routine part of childhood than at any time in the past. Are those two trends related? Could lack of daily exercise be a factor in ADHD? Exercise has a neurochemical effect on the brain similar to that of the popular medications, without the unwanted side effects. Stephen C. Putnam reviews in detail the scientific literature and practical experiments showing that exercise is remarkably effective in treating ADHD. He shows how to determine the right amount of exercise, and how to motivate your children to keep up their activities. This is not an "anti-Ritalin" book. The author acknowledges that medication is sometimes helpful and cautions that care should be taken whenever changing from one treatment to another. However, he notes that a great many children have been able to reduce medication or eliminate it entirely with a regular schedule of exercise — greatly improving classroom performance, social life, and overall well-being. This is hopeful, helpful information for millions of children and their parents, teachers, coaches, and counselors. Reading it will change the way you think about ADHD.

Rethinking Adhd:Integrated Approaches To Helping Children At Home And At School

$22.09

An integrated understanding of the causes of ADHD and a total approach to helping children The recent dramatic rise in the number of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – ADHD – has triggered the increasing prescription of drugs that are seen as the cure' for the disorder, and are often relied on as the only form of treatment. This medical diagnosis focuses exclusively on pathology within the child. But what of the broader influences that can impact on a child's psychological health and affect his or her behaviour? Rethinking ADHD is an essential book for all of us who are trying to make sense of everything that bewilders and fascinates us about the phenomenon of ADHD. It draws its net wide, broadening our thinking beyond the realm of medicine and neurology to embrace as well psychodynamic, psychological and socio-cultural perspectives. In the midst of so much that is controversial about the nature and treatment of ADHD, this highly absorbing book takes a fair and well-balanced view of the knowledge that we have gained so far – in the interests of understanding the way children's minds and personalities develop to produce the kind of behaviour that for many of us becomes so problematic.' – Peter Wilson, Director of Youngminds, UK Drawing on many years of experience, the authors, all experts in the field, have included clinical case examples and practical recommendations for working in partnership with parents and children with behavioural attention problems. Rethinking ADHD is essential reading for teachers, psychologists, therapists, childcare workers, counselors, social workers and parents who want a deeper understanding of how to more comprehensively treat children with ADHD.
